My Stay in Florida - Delray Beach 2020

Notice the traffic...both north and south.
Photo taken at the 70 mph. speed limit.
What a beautiful day to drive. I chose the Florida Turnpike. Apparently folks don't like to take toll roads in Florida. I guess that's because of all the alternative routes available to get from one place to another, complete with heavy traffic and traffic lights. Once again it was an uneventful trip with an early fuel stop in Clermont. Good thing, too. Diesel was $2.51 there and $3.20 in this neck of the woods.
The folks here at DelRaton RV Park, a family owned business for over 45 years, continue to run an efficient operation. There are about 60 sites right on the South Federal Highway, a main thoroughfare in Delray Beach. Behind me about 100 yards to the west is a commuter/freight rail line that is active and busy. As you would expect, it's mainly commuter traffic during the day and freight at night after 10 pm. Fortunately, all I hear is the ringing of a bell at some distant traffic crossing. They don't blow their whistles as there are no public crossings near me. The rumbling of the rail cars went unnoticed quickly. Because this property is nestled between large car dealerships, the frequent alarm sounding horn blowing was more annoying...more during the day; not a night.
This year I met John from Virginia who was set up across the way with wife, Amelia (the plate on the front of his class A--either his wife's name or the name given to his coach. LOL). He's co-owner of the Kitty Hawk RV campground in Outer Banks, NC...right on the beach. He says you walk over the dune in front of your rig and you're on the beach. Add another stop to my bucket list.
Site 30. Nope, no shade.

Wednesday, cousin Norma's daughter, Cheri picked me up and took me to Norma's house in Boca for dinner. There, little Miss Mia Grace, great-granddaughter of Norma (GiGi), enjoyed everything placed before her....as did I. Appetizers of cold cuts, ribs and a cream cheese/salsa dip topped with melted Colby Jack was followed by rigatoni and meatballs and Pinot Noir. Cannolis for desert ended the evening with David, Cheri's husband, driving me back home (to Delray Beach)...stuffed. Thank you, Norma. You never go away hungry from Triton Court....and in my case without leftovers.

Another reminder for the folks who gain weight
when reading about the food I enjoy.  After a light breakfast,

what you read about is my only meal of the day.

Thursday Norma (my chauffeur during my stay here at Delray Beach) and I drove north to Ocean One Grille to meet friends Kathy and Joanne for lunch. A very busy establishment in the heart of Delray Beach, they serve breakfast till 11 am then lunch. The draw? Everything on the menu is $4.99...everything. Drinks? Buy one for $10.00 and if you want more, the next two are free. No small portions, no short glasses. Full pours on the wine. I had the Oceans One Fish & Chips, fries, cole slaw and malt vinegar. Two huge pieces of fish. Check out the extensive menu from the link above. Kathy and Joanne drove south from North Palm Beach. It's been a year since we've seen them so lots of talk and catching up on children and grandchildren. We'll see them again for lunch on Sunday up in North Palm Beach at The Waterway Cafe on the Intercoastal.

Jim and Missie
Friday evening, fellow Blue Mountain Middle School retiree, Jim (social studies) and wife Missie from Boynton Beach, picked me up and took me to dinner at The Sundy House in Delray Beach. This restaurant includes a Boutique Inn and Tropical Garden (the Taru Garden). Special and beautiful. The photos below are from their website. Rather than include my twenty own photos here, I chose instead to give the reader a link to view them. My photos with captions are HERE. The history of the Sundy House is interesting. The Victorian, Queen Anne-style house is the oldest house in Delray Beach and was built in 1902 out of Dade County pine. Delray Beach's first Mayor, John Sundy built this home for his family and they lived here for nearly 80 years. The Sundy Home served as Delray's first church, bank and schoolhouse.

The Taru Garden
"In the middle of the City of Delray Beach, in the subtropical climate of Southeastern Florida, is a true tropical paradise called the Taru Garden. Just beyond our majestic Royal Poinciana, the oldest documented one of its kind in Palm Beach County, you’ll discover a woodsy blend of tropical fruit trees, small edible plants, bamboo groves and flowering trees. Featuring more than 5,000 plants and over 500 varieties of foliage from all over the world it encompasses an acre and envelops two large fish ponds, streams and waterfalls and our Cenote Pond — featuring one of a kind vegetation and fish. It’s a popular spot for nature lovers, artists and avid gardeners. Meander down quiet coral paths, and discover gazebos and benches hidden for quiet contemplation." (taken from their website).

Our table is just on the other
side of the center window.
This evening's dinner was a memorable event. Thank you, Jim and Missie, for the experience. With the windy conditions and the temperature falling toward the low 60's° tonight, we chose to dine indoors. As I write this, the temperature at home in Peekskill, NY is 25°

For starters, they shared a Charcuterie Board, a selection of artisanal meats, olives, figs and cheeses. My main course was Grouper with Basmati rice, coconut green curry and grilled asparagus. For dessert, I enjoyed the Limoncello and Mascarpone pastry; a short crust pastry with lemon cream, pine nuts, almonds and powder sugar...about the size and shape of a creme brulee.

Saturday, after a torrential, windy, early morning downpour, Norma and I drove up to iHop for breakfast. The downpour, around 5 am, on my roof was deafening. Withdrew the awning the night before; even after I had both ends strapped down to play is safe. I didn't want a $1,500 repair bill.

Jason and Sara
Had a nice surprise Saturday afternoon. Daughter, Marybeth, Carlo, Ivana, Sara and Jason stopped by for a short visit on their way to a very windy Delray Beach. Adding some new photos for my "Wall of Shame". Check it out HEREBy the way, if you've had the opportunity to visit me while I was RVing and you're reading this blog check to see if  your photo is included? Let me know.

My evening meal was at Renzo's Cafe & Pizzeria. This traditional restaurant offers an impressive list of 23 gourmet pizzas and 117 menu items. If you've ever heard of or eaten an "Italian dish", guaranteed it would be listed. See for yourself by clicking on the link above. Once again, Norma drove up from Boca and we met Jim and Kathy, Norma's friends from Jersey; just as we did last year. Good food, good company. The Hahn Merlot we had was excellent. Read the wine tasters notes: "A rich, dark garnet color in the glass with vibrant purple shimmer, this Merlot displays aromas of ripe plum, rich cocoa, blueberry, and violet with hints of juicy black cherry. A luscious mouthfeel full of dark fruit, hints of sweet spice, and restrained astringency lead into a delicious, lingering finish filled with toasty oak undertones."

On Sunday, Norma and I drove up to Palm Beach Gardens to The Waterway Cafe to meet Kathy and Joanne once again for lunch. Featuring waterfront dining since 1986, the setting provided front row seating for the Intercoastal's display of watercraft. One of which happened to be Tiger Woods' $20 million, 6,500 sq ft super yacht, "Privacy" Click the link to see this 150' floating hotel. It sleeps between 10 and 12, has a crew of nine and reportedly costs $2 million a year to operate. It includes:
Large deck bar
Eight-person Jacuzzi
Scuba-tank fill station
Inflatable decompression chamber
Cherry woodwork in the interior
VIP stateroom with two queen size cabin amidships and a twin cabin
Gym with a treadmill, exercise bike and free weights
Three-person elevator
Theater
Privacy has a 4,000-mile range thanks to a 12,000-gallon fuel tank, and can travel at a maximum speed of 17 knots.

Kathy's friend, Bob, joined us. For some reason he got special valet privileges when they parked his 1968 Corvette in an out of the way spot. Wonder why?

Afterwards we drove a short distance to Kathy's complex to enjoy a glass of wine and her view of the Intercoastal no more than 50 feet from the sea wall.
Directly east, Singer Island
On Monday, my last full day here at Delray Beach, I spent completing "household chores" to get ready for the next and final phase of my 'winter adventure.' Showered, laundry washed, dried, folded and put away. With my fresh water tank filled all I have to do tomorrow is unplug and go.

My thanks to all the folks who provided me with driving and dining experiences. It's been a terrific and full week. Look forward to reading comments and/or questions from readers as usual. See you in Hollywood, Florida.

My Stay in Florida - Clermont 2020

Tuesday.

I woke up to a foggy morning which I'm sure will burn off as time goes on. I switched my EzPass for Florida's SunPass and off I went toward Clermont starting out about 10 am. Arriving around 1:00 pm I did travel along the Florida Turnpike, a toll road. Last night, imagine sleeping with no heat, no AC, just plain ol' fresh air. Bedtime temperature was 68°. What a stark contrast from the past few weeks at home. Yes, I believe we've had a very mild winter both temperature-wise and snow amounts. I'm sure there'll be disagreement but that's my experience with winter. I think I have a good attitude about weather: as long as I'm able to wake up and experience it, I'm a happy camper. Here in Clermont, FL temps will reach a high of 84° and the low will be 64°. No problem.  Clermont, known as "the gem of the hills,"  is a small city with a population of about 35,000 and is located 22 miles west of Orlando and is surrounded by gently sloping hills in an otherwise flat state. It's home to one of the first constructed landmarks in Florida: the Citrus Tower. It was built in 1956 on one of the highest hills in the area and serves as a monument to Florida’s citrus industry. It stands 226 feet high and has a glass-enclosed observation deck at the top.

The photo that is at the top of my blog page depicts my last year's stay here at Thousand Trails.
Site D-140, way out of the way and a well shaded site.

Site D-140

Thank you, Beca

It's an extensive layout and in the process of expanding. It's run like a time share. Membership affords you stays in any of the "zones" you've chosen for reduced rates. Check it out at: https://thousandtrails.com/  The membership per year is way more than I would save because of my limited travel time so I pay full fare which is only $65/night. My history of visiting this section of Florida is due to my friends Vicki/George, Ray/Kathy and Trish/Craig, all residents. A big thank you to them for providing me all the wonderful memories. Those memories have been captured in the blogs listed below. If you're interested, they're listed below in chronological order; just click on the red link to read all about it.

2015 Part I - Part IIPart III
2017 Skipped a winter trip to Florida. In July, I traveled instead cross country to visit son, Chuck and family in San Jose, CA.
2019  Spoiler alert: Lots of pictures of food. (Yes, I'm aware how much you don't like looking at photos of food)

After a bit of a wait while other campers were being escorted to their site, I finally settled in at site #D-140; very shaded with a flat, sandy surface and NO INTERNET. This will be a problem. Turning on my own hotspot with the iPhone improved the situation.  There's another BIG THANK YOU to Ray, Tony, Jack and George who chauffeured me back and forth from my campsite to theirs about a mile away. This included our dining trips to locations outside the campgrounds.

Wednesday Ray picked me up and we traveled the mile back to Elite Resort for the rest of the day. The Hudson Islanders gathered for a "Meet and Greet" at President Tony/Doreen's site. There is a large number of members of our RV group that live right here in Elite at Citrus Valley. Goodies contributed by the members satisfied the day's requirement for food (and drink).

Thursday evening's last minute trip to Corelli's in Clermont for dinner was, once again a treat having been here last year; a return treat. Tonight, just Tony, Doreen, Jack, Noreen and I. Okay, you know who you are. Close your eyes and scroll down. Here comes food.

Pasta a la vodka...I had mine with ziti

Lasagna with Ricotta Cheese, Mozzarella Cheese,
Beef, Onion, and Green Peppers

Fettuccine CarbonaraBacon, Ham, Peas,
and Black Olives in a Cream Sauce

Manicotti stuffed with ricotta

Chicken parmigiana - Breaded Chicken Cutlet
with Marinara Sauce and Mozzarella Cheese
Needless to say, the portions were huge...very huge and will provide future meals for each of us.

Friday - Valentine's Day - Kathy, Ray and I traveled to Celebration, FL to enjoy the hospitality of old (young) friends, Craig and Trish. Sadly, with George still under the weather with the stomach bug that's been around this area, Vicki thought it best to bow out of the invitation. Spaghetti with shrimp, baked lasagna, crab cakes, salad and a terrific Cabernet topped off a delicious meal. Thank you Trish and Craig.

Saturday Ray and I enjoyed our morning coffee at my site after which he drove me over to Elite. It was a relaxing day as I sat around the Tony/Jack's site.  The weather was once again beautiful; breezy, mostly sunny and temps in low 70's. Knowing I was there for the day, I brought all I needed including my electronics, my food and my wine. Being with friends is always enjoyable and rewarding.

Sunday my Uber was George. Back at Elite I enjoyed the company of Vicki and George at their site. They're permanent residents here and travel north for family (and me..LOL). There, I did some computer work for VC and in the evening visited Jack who, along with Noreen drove me back to Thousand Trails.

Hannah, an art student, was
proud to show off her new ink.
Monday. Tonight's dining out took us to OakWood Smokehouse and Grill in Clermont. Hannah, our waitress, took good care of us and we enjoyed BBQ at its best according to their awards, three years, for their baby back ribs.

I anticipated...delicious.
Tomorrow morning, I'm off to Delray Beach, FL, about 200 miles southeast. I have a full agenda of visiting and dining. Check in again next week. Till then, stay well, stay warm and stay safe. Drop a comment or two....I already know your thoughts on food; keep them to yourself.
